As part of its responsibility to prudently use public funds, FTA routinely performs project oversight to ensure that major capital transit projects are executed professionally, efficiently, and in conformance with applicable statutes, regulations, guidance, and sound engineering and project management practices. WMATA’s SafeTrack program qualifies as a major capital project under FTA guidelines. This oversight is separate and distinct, but complementary to, the temporary, direct safety oversight FTA is performing through its WMATA Safety Oversight office.
