SMS in Practice Workshops

Advancing Safety Risk Management and Safety Assurance

Based on the popularity of the virtual SMS in Practice: Advancing Safety Risk Management and Safety Assurance workshops, three additional sessions of these two full day virtual workshops are open for registration. They will be held from 10:30am to 5:30pm EST to accommodate multiple time zones.

FTA developed the workshop for transit agency safety department personnel, rail and bus transit operations and maintenance managers who oversee agency safety performance, and State Safety Oversight Agency managers and staff. All participants should have a basic understanding of the four components of SMS as they are applied to the transit industry prior to taking this class.

The workshop explores common challenges identified during FTA technical assistance center inquiries, audits, and Agency Safety Plan reviews, including:

  • Identifying hazards, consequences, and risks
  • Distinguishing causal factors critical to determining safety mitigations
  • Prioritizing risks through in-depth analysis
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of safety mitigations

100% of previous session, virtual participants agreed or strongly agreed that the small group activities were valuable opportunities to practice skills and over 90% agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend the workshop to a co-worker and that the activities supported them in better carrying out their job responsibilities.

Space is limited to 50 participants per session due to the interactive format. A waitlist will be provided. If there is high demand, more virtual workshops may be offered.

New workshop topics coming soon!
