About Region 9

At Region 9, we strive to provide exemplary customer service to transit agencies and other stakeholders within our service area. Our main office is located in San Francisco, California, with 30 staff members. In an effort to enhance our delivery of the Federal Transit Administration's programs, we also have 12 staff housed in the Los Angeles Office to primarily serve the southern California area; a Region 9 representative in Honolulu to serve the Hawaii and U.S. Pacific territories program; and, soon, a representative in Phoenix to serve the Arizona program. Our staff are trained in a variety of disciplines; we are community planners, engineers, transportation program specialists, environmental protection specialists, financial specialists, attorneys, civil rights specialists, and administrative staff.

Areas/Grantees Served

The Region 9 Office serves over 165 grantees, located within:

  • 4 States - Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada
  • 3 Pacific Territories - American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam
  • 37 Tribal Nations
  • 73 Urbanized Areas, including - Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Honolulu
  • 11 of the Top 50 transit agencies nationwide
  • 14 regulated rail operators

Planning & Environmental

In partnership with four Federal Highway Administration Division Offices, FTA Region 9 oversees statewide and metropolitan planning programs in:

  • 4 States - Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada
  • 31 Metropolitan Planning Organizations, including 29 Transportation Management Areas (greater than 200,000 in population)

Region 9 is active in environmental studies for planned projects, with:

Grants

  • Grants Development - In FY 2019, Region 9 staff processed 282 grant actions amounting to $3.3 billion in federal funding obligations to support state, local, and tribal transit projects and services.
  • Program Management - FTA Region 9 oversees a total portfolio of over $9.5 billion in federal funding distributed among more than 1,000 active grants for transit projects and other initiatives.
