Regulations & Program Overview

In its role of providing financial assistance to develop new transit systems and improve, maintain, and operate existing systems nationwide, FTA oversees thousands of grants provided to states, tribes, and local public agencies to support public transportation. Grantees have a responsibility to comply with statutory and regulatory requirements associated with the management of federally assisted grants.

What’s New

  • On July 1, 2025, FTA published an update to the Charter Bus Service Regulation. The final rule removes the outdated Federal financial assistance programs listed in Appendix A and the guidance in additional appendices.

Emergency Relief Program

FTA’s Emergency Relief program was established under MAP-21, and enables FTA to provide assistance to public transit operators in the aftermath of an emergency or major disaster.
