Early Career Programs

Internships at FTA provide a stepping stone for people in the early stages of their careers to gain experience and work with a dynamic, talented team. Join our diverse community of professionals at FTA, where we work together to improve public transportation for America’s communities.

Pathways & Recent Graduates

Pathways Internship Program

FTA hires Pathways Interns with a focus on long-term career potential and how well they fit with FTA's workforce needs. The Pathways Internship Program spans multiple semesters, readying students for careers and providing a direct path to full-time employment upon graduation.

 

 

 

To be eligible, candidates must be:

  • A U.S. citizen.
  • At least 18 years old on or before the first day of the internship.
  • Enrolled in a vocational or trade, undergraduate or graduate program at a 2- to 4-year college or university.
  • Currently have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4-point scale).
  • Able to complete at least 640 hours of work before completing a degree or certificate program.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Recent Graduate Program

For those who have recently graduated from qualifying educational institutions, the Recent Graduate Program provides opportunities to apply academic training and knowledge in a professional setting. Recent graduate appointees are placed in a two-year career development program.

 

 

To be eligible, candidates must have:

  • Completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associate, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution.
  • Not be a veteran who has received their degree within two years because of military service obligations. Veterans have up to six years after completing their degree to apply.

Seasonal Internships

FTA Diversity in Federal Transit Program

This program provides undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to gain professional experience while contributing to FTA’s diversity and inclusion goals. DFT interns are assigned projects that improve skills, build experience, broaden professional networks, and make a lasting impact. We welcome undergraduate, graduate, and law students with backgrounds underrepresented in federal agencies. The internships take place in person at FTA headquarters in Washington, D.C., and in regional offices across the country.

 

FTA will host the DFT Internship Program for 10 weeks from June through August.  Apply now through February 18, 2024.

To be eligible, candidates must be:

  • A U.S. citizen.
  • Enrolled in a vocational or trade, undergraduate or graduate program at a 2- to 4-year college or university.
  • Completed your freshman year of college before the internship begins.
  • Currently have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4-point scale).
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Available to be onsite and participate for the duration of the 10-week program.

Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups

This program provides an opportunity for students to gain real-life experience in public service focused on transportation. The Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) is hosted with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Washington Center. The program is open to undergraduate, graduate, and law school students who are U.S. citizens and enrolled at degree-granting U.S. institutions of higher education for the fall semester.

The program, which lasts approximately 10 weeks, places students with USDOT agencies in Washington, D.C., and across the country. Optional field trips are offered throughout the summer. The program includes a stipend as well as fully furnished housing if needed.

To be eligible, candidates must be:

  • A U.S. citizen (dual citizens are also eligible).
  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program (AA/AS, BA/BS, Masters, JD, MD, or PhD) at an accredited higher education institution during the internship (visit ed.gov/accreditation to verify your school and/or program of study). Students pursuing only a credential or certificate program will be considered ineligible.
  • Completed freshman year of college before the internship begins.
  • Law school applicants must be entering their second or third year of law school in the upcoming fall semester.
  • Applicants who are scheduled to graduate during the spring or summer semesters of this academic year are not eligible for consideration for STIPDG unless: (1) they have been accepted for graduate school enrollment, or other enrollment at an institution of higher education for a degree program; or (2) their acceptance is pending. There will be no exceptions.
  • Currently have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher desired.
  • Available to be onsite and able to participate through the duration of the 10-week program.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Future Leaders in Public Service

Through the FLIPS Internship Program, FTA brings diverse young talent to the agency. It offers students the opportunity to apply their educational training to work in the Federal government.

 

 

 

To be eligible, candidates must be:

  • A U.S. citizen.
  • Enrolled at an accredited educational institution in an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Currently have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
  • Obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Applications for summer 2024 will open in March 2024.

DOD Skillbridge Program

This program provides an opportunity for service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects service members with industry partners in real-world job settings.

  • Must be available to participate in the program within 2-4 months of applying.
  • Submit your resume to FTAInternships@dot.gov. Please include your available timeframe to participate in the program and the opportunity that you are most interested in.
  • Qualified candidates will interview with the FTA Program office for further consideration.
  • If selected, we will begin the onboarding process and welcome you to FTA.
