NCI Charrette System Guide for Transit Oriented Development

Document

In cities and regions across the country, people are increasingly leveraging public investment in transit to build sustainable, equitable communities. This development approach is commonly called transit oriented development (TOD). TOD is typically defined as more compact development within easy walking distance of transit stations (typically one half mile) that contains a mix of uses such as housing, jobs, shops, restaurants and entertainment. TOD is really about creating walkable, sustainable communities for people of all ages and incomes and providing more transportation and housing choices, such as townhomes, apartments, livework spaces, and lofts. These communities support a lifestyle that is convenient, affordable and active, and create places where children can play and elders can age comfortably.
