Bus Safety Program

Overview

FTA's Bus Safety Program provides technical assistance to the bus transit industry to advance improvements in bus safety and support implementation of Safety Management Systems. Through this program, FTA conducts voluntary reviews of transit agencies that operate bus service, analyzes bus safety issues and trends across the industry, provides voluntary guidance materials and tools, and collaborates with industry groups to improve coordination of bus safety efforts.

Voluntary Onsite Bus Safety Reviews

The Bus Safety Program offers voluntary onsite bus safety reviews to transit agencies that operate bus service. The reviews are intended to help transit agencies identify opportunities to improve the safety of their bus operations, while helping FTA better understand bus safety challenges and identify and share safety best practices with the transit industry. These reviews are voluntary and provided at no cost. Transit agencies may decide which, if any, of the resulting FTA recommendations to adopt and implement.
