Trump’s Transportation Department to Invest $166 Million in Modernizing  America’s Passenger Rail Infrastructure for American Families

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

One-third of subway and passenger rail vehicles in the U.S. are more than 25 years old

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced a $166 million investment in America’s passenger rail services and infrastructure. Under the Trump Administration’s America First agenda, Secretary Sean P. Duffy is building modern and family-friendly transportation systems that will improve the quality of life for Americans.

One-third of subway and passenger rail vehicles in the United States are more than 25 years old. These older railcars contribute to delays, increased maintenance costs and customer dissatisfaction.

Old and unreliable transit infrastructure is unacceptable. America is the greatest country in the world, and our families deserve a transportation network to match. This is another example of the Trump Administration delivering safer travel, improved reliability, and American-made rail cars for the American people,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy.

Additional Information:

FTA’s Rail Vehicle Replacement Grants aim to replace aging railcars, improve reliability, safety, and convenience on the nation’s rail transit systems.

The Notice of Funding Opportunity outlines the application criteria. Applicants are encouraged to submit eligible projects as soon as possible and must do so by July 6, 2026.
